Shalom Rabbi! How come there are so many orthodox women wearing immodest wigs? I thought that only very short wigs, with a hat on top, are permissible according to some authorities and all other are strictly against it. Isn't the purpose of covering the hair to not look attractive to others than the husband?

Shalom,   The blessing rests on a something which is not visible to the eyes.   The meaning here is that not only should the hair and head be covered, but that the persons actions and behaviour should be  something that doesn't stand out to draw attention.  Remember the wife is called the ikaret ha bayit(literally the mainstay or pillar of the home).  This is why the covering of the head with different customs of wigs or different customs of wigs+hats/scarves or simply loosely with a scarf exist.   Now understanding the spirit beyond halacha /law is the key.  If a person is truly modest, then doing something that makes the "average joe" in the street want to stare at your beauty would definitely be against the spirit of the law.   Understanding the first mentioned principle of blessing resting upon that which is concealed, we now understand why there are so many opinions on this matter.   Remember that we have a tradition that which people can follow is preferred to that which most won't follow.   For example most men don't daily immerse in a mikve/ritualarium and yet in the time of Ezra it was required.   As the level of the generation changes, so the approach of the halachic authorities either bends to the level ot the people, or finds a way to make a stand.   From my perspective it is much more important that people try to be as modest as possible in the truest spirit of Tzniut rather than worry about which specific legal authority to follow. It's not enough to say...aha I cover everything so I'm fine....Rather the focus should be on having a mindset of walk sincerely with hashem.  *tamim tihye im hashem elokecha)*   Hoping this clarifies the deeper issue for you as there are multiple orthodox legal opinions on the matter and traditions that are centuries deep on both sides of the matter.   Some say scarves only....wigs are immodest some say wigs only scarves are immodest some say short non natural looking wigs only and not the slicked beauty parlor hairdo's on their wigs only. and then others say wigs + some type of full coverage on top of that.   I'm not going to advocate one or the other but I believe that its a matter of understanding the underlying issue. According to the Zohar prologue- a woman's hair is to be covered in order to nullify strict judgements which can affect her children/husband/family in a negative way.   Best Wishes   ----R.Yosef Karpman   It's extremely important to know that hair covering alone isn't the only matter.  Also the use of cosmetics is a major divide as many orthodox wifes of rabbi's will frequently go with cosmetics and yet its an aspect of actual znut *promiscuity* in the times of the patriarchs/matriarchs, and so we should be
