American law vs. Jewish law in marriage

Am I married according to Jewish law, if I just had a legal wedding according to American law, or do I also need to have a Jewish ceremony with a chupah and a Rabbi?

According to Torah its advisable for all jews to have a wedding with an orthodox *at least* rabbi
the reason being that a ceremony takes place that allows for the spiritual fusion of the couple.
