“…Command the Bnei Yisrael and say to them: When you arrive in the land of Canaan, this is the land that will fall to you as an inheritance, the land of Canaan according to its borders…” – Bamidbar 34:2

Rashi states that Moshe told Bnei Yisrael the exact boundaries of the Land of Israel for religious purposes. “Since many mitzvos apply to the Land of Israel and not outside of it, it was necessary to chart the outer limits of its boundaries from all sides, to inform you that those mitzvos apply anywhere within these borders.”

From where does Rashi derive that Moshe outlined the borders of the Land for any reason other than informing Bnei Yisrael exactly what G-d intended for them to conquer?

the Gift of the Land of Israel

Rashi learned this from the additional phrase, “that will fall to you,” in the verse, “this is the land that will fall to you as an inheritance.” The outline of the borders that G-d intended for Bnei Yisrael to conquer could have been introduced with the words “This is your inheritance in the land of Canaan according to its borders.” Why was it relevant to mention here that the Land “will fall to you”?

These additional words emphasize that the conquest of the Land will not be the product of human warfare and fighting. Rather, the Land of Israel “will fall to you”—it will be delivered by G-d into the hands of Bnei Yisrael, as though entirely without any effort on their part. This emphasis here indicates that the borders are stated here for reasons related to G-d’s miraculous delivery of the Land to Bnei Yisrael; namely, for reasons related to the mitzvos, our reciprocal obligations toward G-d, Who will cause this land to fall to us with ease.

Rashi therefore explains that the Land of Israel’s borders were charted here “since many mitzvos apply to the Land of Israel and not outside of it; …to inform you that those mitzvos apply anywhere within these borders.”
