Hello Rabbi Anava, During  havdalah we recite the bracha for borai miorai ha-ash and we look at our fingernails to see the shine of the nails. My question is two part. One, why do we do this? and Two, if I am wearing nail polish and don't see the reflection of the actual fingernail do I then not fulfill the mitzvah? Thank you so much for your inspirational teachings! C.D.R.

Shalom .   We recite the havdala to begin the flame of the week .  That is we begin the energy of the weekday secular energy As for looking at nails that are polished or lacquered it’s not a problem. The reasons for looking at the nails is to reconnect with our original luminescent body which was not like skin but more like a clear light body.  To remembering that is our true body during the week    best wishes———   R.Yosef Karpman
