Hi Alon,

If we are striving every day to refine our middots and it's working, but at the same time we have limited amounts of mitzvot, is that enough?

The torah learning and mitzvot are partially created to teach us to refine and connect to HaShem through are middot.

As someone who did tshueva with Chabad and loves the rebbe and chassidis but "can't handle" the lifestyle, is a limited amount of mitzvot but true character refinement enough? Or even praiseworthy?

Shalom, Working on your midot is extremely important, but one must also perform all the Mitzvot at the same time. It is not enough just to work on your midot, you also must work on your Mitzvot and add them as you grow You don't have to lead a lifestyle of Chabad, I know many people who became observant through Chabad and then adjusted their lifestyle according to what fits them. As long as you follow the Torah 100%, it does not mater what lifestyle you go by. But don't let your Yetzer Harah convince you that a limited amount of Mitzvot is enough, all Jews are equal and we all have to do all the Mitzvot the same. If you are still 'taking off' and performing all the Mitzvot are hard for you, then add them slowly slowly as you go. The refinement of character has to be done along with performing Mitzvot, one can not concentrate on just one type of Avoda (Self work) As of 'praiseworthy' - anything you do is amazing and has great value in the eye of G-d, but you should strive to constantly grow and grow (even if you don't wear a black hat...) Wishing you great success, Rabbi Alon Anava
