Timing

“…I will give your rains in their time…” – Vayikra 26:4

וְנָתַתִּי גִשְׁמֵיכֶם בְּעִתָּם – ויקרא כו, ד

In Parshas Bechukosai, G-d declares that if the Jewish people will observe His commandments and follow His statutes —meaning, they will “toil in the study of Torah” (Rashi) — they will be blessed with prosperity, peace and security, and they will multiply and flourish. Among the blessings detailed in the Torah is G-d’s promise that not only will the land of Israel have rain, but the rains will also fall “in their time.” As Rashi explains, the distinctive blessing in this verse is not just the rain but the timing of the rainfall—“at a time that people do not usually go out.” I.e., the rains of blessing will not be inconvenient or disturbing.

The blessing of rain, in its broader sense, is a reference to overall material bounty. (Hence the Hebrew word for physicality, gashmius, from the word, geshem, rain.) Accordingly, the distinctive blessing of rain falling “in its time” also applies to the general blessing of material prosperity. If we follow His statutes and observe His commandments, G-d will not only bless us with material wealth, He will grant it in a manner that will not distract us from our primary pursuits—Torah study and divine worship; it will serve only to bolster and strengthen them.
