The Gifts of the Gifted

“…All the women whose hearts uplifted them with wisdom spun the goat hair…” – Shemot 35:26

וְכָל הַנָּשִׁים אֲשֶׁר נָשָׂא לִבָּן אֹתָנָה בְּחָכְמָה טָווּ אֶת הָעִזִּים – שמות לה, כו

This is particularly remarkable considering that Bnei Yisrael had not been instructed to process the goat hair at all before donating it to the Mishkan.

The manner in which the women spun the goat hair took exceptional talent, for they spun it into yarn while it was still attached to the goats’ bodies (see Rashi).

Yet these gifted women wished for their contribution to be of the highest quality possible. They therefore spun the goat hair while it was still attached to the animal, when the fibers are most pliable and thus produce a better yarn, and only then donated it to the Mishkan.

There is an important lesson to be learned from the Torah’s account of this donation. Recognizing their unique ability, the women who spun the goat hair were certain that they were granted this gift in order to utilize it in the construction of the Mishkan, the dwelling place we make for G-d in this world. They therefore found a means of enhancing the Mishkan through their special talent, even though they had not been directly commanded to do so.

The same applies for all the unique gifts that we are each granted by G-d. Whether a remarkable talent or exceptional financial success, we must recognize that being blessed with extraordinary abilities allows us and compels us to contribute extraordinarily towards holy causes. What remains is for us to seek them out.
