Parashat Ki Tavo

“…..G-D HAS SET YOU APART THIS DAY TO BE HIS TREASURED PEOPLE, JUST AS HE SPOKE CONCERNING YOU…..” (DEVARIM 26:18)

In Shemos 19:5, Rashi explains the significance of being G-d’s “treasure”:

A beloved treasure, like “and the treasures (וּסְגֻלַּת) of the kings” (Koheles 2:8) – costly vessels and precious stones, which the kings store away. Likewise, you will be treasured by Me more than the other nations.

The secret treasures are not used to beautify and enhance the king’s crown or palace, nor are they spent to fund his campaigns. The royal treasures are saved for no purpose other than their very being; they are hidden away simply for the king to delight in owning them. Moreover, part of what gives the king his personal sense of kingship is the fact that as the monarch, he is accorded ownership of the kingdom’s treasures simply for the sake of the personal satisfaction he has from owning them.

This is the meaning of G-d setting apart the Jewish people as His treasure – besides for valuing the “purpose” they serve. Through their observance of His commands, the Jewish people reveal G-d’s reign throughout the world, thereby expanding His “empire”. In addition, however, G-d treasures the Jewish people and delights simply in their existence. The soul of each Jew is a source of delight for G-d, even before the Jew accomplishes or achieves any mission in the service of G-d.
